The Hawai`i Health Survey

What is HHS?

The Hawai`i Health Survey (HHS), managed by the Office of Health Status Monitoring (OHSM) is a survey conducted to provide the Hawai`i Department of Health (DOH) useful statistics for planning and evaluating health services and programs, and to provide health information for the public.

The HHS is a continuous statewide household survey on health and socio-demographic data modeled after the National Interview Health Survey.  It was first conducted in 1968 as a household interview survey and has been a telephone survey since 1996.

HHS Objective

Collect and analyze data on health and social conditions that affect all age groups in Hawai`i’s population.

HHS collects demographic information for measuring population changes during intercensal years. It is the primary source of statewide estimates of gender, age, race, education, household size, insurance status, and health status.

Information on special topics is covered each year.  The issues are health care related and currently include childcare, food security, health care access, literacy, suicide ideation, tobacco usage in the home, and others.

Sample Size

In 2000, HHS gathered data on 17,183 people in 5,882 households statewide.  Similar numbers are collected each year.  The survey target group is all persons living in non-institutionalized housing units in the State of Hawai`i and having working telephone service at the time of the survey.  Results exclude residents of Ni`ihau, households without phones, the homeless, and persons in group quarters.

The sampling method is random digit dialing (RDD) and the sample is disproportionately selected by island.  That is, slightly larger proportions of interviews are conducted on islands with smaller populations.  The objective is to adequately represent all island populations.  Data weighting is required for statewide population estimates.
