SMS Hawai'i Names New President, CEO

SMS Research & Marketing Services Inc., the oldest market research and consulting company in Hawaii, named Tim Carson as its new president and CEO on Tuesday.

SMS Chairman Hersh Singer and President Jim Dannemiller are planning to retire from their leadership roles. Singer, who has led SMS for nearly 40 years, will remain as senior advisor to the firm to aid with the transition.

The full-service research and marketing company was established in 1960, and officials with the firm told Pacific Business News that it currently has 21 full-time employees, 40 part-time employees and 30-plus clients. Carson officially begins Dec. 1.

“SMS is fortunate to have someone with Carson’s experience, energy, and vision leading SMS,” Singer said in a statement. “Carson’s understanding of building customer relationships combined with his research, consulting and management experience will take SMS deep into the future.”

Carson was born and raised in Kailua before graduating from Punahou School and the University of Oregon. He has worked for the last 16 years in management, sales and consulting roles in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., with companies like IBM, RSA Archer and Edgile. He oversaw North American and Latin markets.

His career began working for U.S. Reps. Patsy T. Mink and Ed Case in Washington.

“I am extremely excited to take on this new role serving our clients, employees, and community,” said Carson. “I look forward to working with the extremely talented SMS team to strategize and develop new products and services to meet the current and future challenges of our clients and the Hawaii community.”

SMS' clients range between local, national, and international. It conducts surveys via telephone, mail, the internet, or through intercept surveys. According to its website, telephone surveys are still the most widely used method of collecting information because of the flexibility they offer in screening respondents, survey design, relative cost, and timely completion.
